Welcome to our blog, where we will walk you through the step-by-step process of laying turf to transform your outdoor space into a lush and vibrant dream lawn.
With the right guidance and a little bit of effort, you can create an enviable green oasis that will be the envy of your neighbours. Your new lawn will also attract lots of wildlife to your garden. So let’s get started!
Between October and April is the best time to lay new turf, provided there is no heavy frost in the ground.
Once your ground is primed and ready, following the tips in our previous blog, it's time to measure the area so that you can order the correct amount of turf.
Measure the length and width of the area, multiplying the figures to get the square meterage required. When ordering your turf it’s always a good idea to order a few extra rolls to allow for damaged ones and cutting in. Always try to use a reputable turf supplier to ensure the best quality turf for your new lawn. A good turf supplier will be happy to assist you in determining the quantity you need based on your measurements if you are not sure.
Once your turf has arrived, it is advisable to lay it as soon as possible to avoid the risk of it drying out or degrading. Begin by laying the first strip of turf along a straight edge, such as a path or patio.
Unroll the turf gently, ensuring it is aligned with the straight edge and not overlapping or stretching. Continue to lay the remaining strips adjacent to each other, staggering the joints like brickwork to help the new turf to knit in well.
Always use planks to walk or kneel on to help press the new turf and spread your weight so you don’t indent the new turf with your feet. Use a sharp knife (or turfing knife) to trim the turf to fit it in any irregular shapes or edges you have.
It is best to try and keep all cut pieces of turf as big as possible so you don’t have small pieces of turf which will dry out really quickly and can die.
Immediately after laying the turf, water it thoroughly, ensuring that it is well soaked. This will help the roots establish firmly into the soil. For the first two weeks, water the turf daily if the weather is dry, preferably in the early morning or late evening to minimize evaporation (if the weather is warm). Usually, during October to April, we have plenty of rain to not need to water it daily in the UK!
Avoid walking on the newly laid turf for at least a few weeks to allow it to take root and establish itself.
By following these simple steps, you are well on your way to achieving a stunning, lush lawn that will be the pride and joy of your outdoor space.
